A Detroit community organization. When you need a hand finding help, understanding your options, or simply being heard — the Sisters are there.
Sisters in Social Work is led by Millie, whose heart for this community has always pointed the same direction: people helping people, right here in Detroit. The organization exists so that no family has to figure out a hard season alone — someone who knows the landscape of help, and who treats every person who walks up with respect, can make all the difference.
Social work, at its best, is neighbor work. It is listening before advising. It is knowing which door to knock on, which form matters, which program fits — and walking with a family until they get through the door. That is the work the Sisters do, and the standard everything here is held to: dignity first, always.
The areas of community work the Sisters are built around — the everyday ways a social work organization shows up for its neighbors.
A steady, trusted presence for individuals and families working through hard seasons — someone to talk to, someone who knows the community, and someone who will not hand you a pamphlet and walk away.
Standing beside people when they deal with agencies, systems, and paperwork — helping neighbors understand their rights, speak for themselves, and be treated fairly at every step.
Connecting families to the help that already exists — food support, housing resources, utility assistance, health services, and community programs — and helping them get from "where do I start?" to enrolled and served.
Special care for the households carrying the most: parents raising children on tight budgets, and older neighbors who deserve to age in their own community, with support around them.
Applications, renewals, and letters can decide whether help arrives at all. The Sisters help neighbors understand what a form is asking, gather what is needed, and meet the deadline.
Backing neighborhood efforts that make daily life more dignified for everyone — the projects below — and lending the organization's voice and hands where the community needs them.
Sisters in Social Work supports community projects across Detroit — efforts that protect dignity in everyday life. One effort the Sisters proudly stand behind:
Everybody deserves a safe, clean place to go. Right now, too many Detroiters — workers, parents, seniors, people without a home — have nowhere. Millie and the Sisters support the community effort, led with Detroit Neon Lights, to pilot clean, attended public restrooms in the parts of the city that need them most, and to judge the results in public. Access to a restroom is basic dignity, and dignity is the Sisters' whole mission.
The partnership between Sisters in Social Work and Detroit Neon Lights is new, and it is growing: more projects, more neighborhoods, more neighbors served. As new efforts take shape, they will be announced here.
Good work travels in good company. Sisters in Social Work is proud to work alongside partners who bring their own strengths to the same mission.
Detroit Neon Lights is the Sisters' community partner — a Detroit company putting its skills, its shop, and its follow-through behind neighborhood projects the two organizations believe in together, starting with the public restroom dignity pilot. Mission meets machine: the Sisters bring the heart and the community's trust; Detroit Neon Lights brings the building and operations power to get things done. Learn more at detroitneonlights.com.
